William O. Steele was born December 22, 1917, in Franklin, Tenn, and died June 25, 1979, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He wrote children's books on pioneer history and Tennessee folklore, and received a Newbery Honor citation for The Perilous Road, as well as other awards and honors. He also wrote non-fiction.
